“Liberal MPs have voted against having the power to oust Mark Carney as their leader,” reports the Globe and Mail, “despite months of internal frustrations last year that they couldn’t kick out Justin Trudeau.”
Imagine: all that drama and learning absolutely no lesson at all.
Incidentally, I recommend the Hub podcast’s recent interview with the author of the quite relevant Reform Act, MP Michael Chong.
Michael Lewis’s recent and excellent collection, Who Is Government? The Untold Story of the Public Service (2025) left me with two thoughts. First, we really do need to distinguish between elected representatives and the public service. Blurring our frustration with the former when we say “government” belittles the effort and sacrifice of the latter. Second, as Lewis writes in the introduction: “Our government—as opposed to our elected representatives—has no talent for telling its own story.”
